How It Works

  • How long do resin-bound steps last in freeze-thaw conditions?

    A correctly specified resin-bound step, with a reinforced nosing detail and a frost-proof resin formulation rated for Golden’s elevation, resists freeze-thaw cycling for many years. The key is matching the resin grade to the actual temperature range, not using a standard formulation designed for lower elevations.

  • What happens if the nosing edges are not reinforced?

    Unreinforced nosing edges are the first point to crack. Repeated wetting and freezing at the thin edge causes spalling within one to two winters, creating a trip hazard and allowing water to undermine the sub-base. Reinforcing the nosing at installation prevents this failure entirely.

  • Can hydronic snow melt be added after the steps are installed?

    No. Snow melt loops must be set into the sub-base before the resin layer is applied. Retrofitting requires removing the existing surface. If snow melt is a possibility, it must be specified and priced in the original written quote before installation begins.

  • Will rock salt damage resin-bound steps?

    Repeated salt application degrades the resin binder over time, loosening aggregate and reducing traction. Hydronic snow melt or sand-based grit are the recommended alternatives. The installer can specify a resin formulation with higher chemical resistance if salt use is unavoidable.

  • How is the aggregate color affected by UV exposure at Foothills elevation?

    UV-stable aggregate holds its finish at elevation without fading. The resin binder is also UV-stable, so the surface color and texture remain consistent over time. The written quote specifies the exact aggregate blend so you know what finish to expect before work starts.
